On, or about February 1st I will have a 15 KW 1983 Onan diesel generator available for pick up in Rock Hall, Maryland. Under the right circumstances, I would be willing to have it loaded on a trailer and deliver it to a location of the buyer’s choice within a couple of hundred miles. Being heavy, you would have to have a way to off load it on delivery. It is a model MDJF and is complete with sound shield and lots of new parts. It could be best described as a "running take out" that is being replaced with a new smaller generator. When we surveyed the Hatteras back in August, it started right up, but did produce more white exhaust smoke than it should have.

In a couple of weeks, I will likely list it on eBay and/or Craigslist in Baltimore, but I thought someone on this list might have an interest. From the logs that came with the boat, I have about five years of detailed maintenance and improvement information documenting big bucks spent to keep her running. I would be happy to email these logs to you if you are interested. Certainly she would be good for parts and/or a rebuild for the right person. Why not make me an offer?

When it put out the white smoke, was it under load, or just running? The gen on my 46 Matthews would smoke like crazy forever, until put under load then it cleared instantly. I was all set to replace it until I called Alan Bramble at Tolchester. He said that a gen really doesn't get to proper operating temp unless you put a load on it.

Eric,

At the time of the survey, I already knew that I was planning major changes to the electrical system that did not include a 15KW Onan generator with 3300 hours on it. When we started her up, it was apparent that she ran good, but the exhaust system needed work inside the boat since we had a good bit of exhaust in the engine room. We also notice she produced more white smoke outside than we would have expected. At that point, not wanting to kill the engine surveyor, we shut her down and didn't go any further. We did not load her up. Obviously the generator became part of the post survey discussion. So, she is available as is, where is after Haven Harbour pulls the unit out in January. The other day when we winterized, the mechanic noted the unit was nice and clean with replaced injectors, lift pump, etc. If you would like me to send you the service logs, I would be more than happy to do so. Like I said, make me an offer. She is coming from a nice clean engine room. She may be a real diamond in the rough, but I can't attest to it one way or the other.

Jim, is your Onan still available? If so, have you named a price?
