Does anyone have any recommendations for preparation work and paint for engine room and engines on my 1980 60' Sportfish? The engines are currently white. The engine room is kind of filthy right now because the previous owner decided to run the boat with an exhaust leak on the inboard side of the starboard engine. The engine is all fixed, but left a lot of soot to clean as well as a nice coating of oil on everything. Any recommendations would be most appreciated. :)

I have detailed two enigine rooms in Hats. One on a 43' and the other a '55.
on the 43' I used Awlgrip primer and paint(snow white) installed 4, 4ft flour. lights and it was really nice to be able to look around and see instantly if you had any problem. The cost for the paint was around $600.00 as I recall. The 55 was done with a two part epoxy called Ameron. Also done in white, the cost was around $60.00 a gallon vs. the $270.00 a gallon for Awlgrip. The ameron does not flow or look as shiney as the awlgrip, but it does hold up reasonably well, it does not require any primer, just clean, sand a bit and paint. It should also be noted that I did these during a repower with engines out. In your case with engines in, I would awlgrip the engines, and ameron the engine room. Bottom line is don't get in a hurry, remove all the old paint you possible can and do a good job. Tip: Use aluminum foil around wiring runs, hoses etc instead of tape. Goes on really fast and removes even faster, and it is cheaper than tape. Nothing ruins a good looking engine room faster that paint on all of the wires etc. Tight Lines.

I've had real good luck with a product called Mean Green. It must be Mean Green not Simple Green. It will remove just about everything including some paints and it won't burn. Vapers are strong in a closed area. I use it for everything. It removes Black spyder marks with ease. Sometimes it looks a little yellow when you put it on but that goes away. $5.00 gal. at Family Dollar. Bill

Capt4fish I too am in the process on painting my engines. Please advise what paint you would use on the engines I want high gloss white. They are in good condition just need a cleaning. Thanks. The Gina Marie/Tom
