Detroit Diesel colors

I have a question about the colors of the Detroit’s. Did Hatteras paint the engines white at the factory or were they painted by owners over the years. It seems that every Hatteras I see has white engines but many other brands like Chris Craft and Hartman have green Detroit’s, which as I understand is the color that they came from the factory originally. I know that this is not life or death important, but was just curious. John

They were always green from the factory until the 92 silver series which were silver. Some marine converters like Covington painted them white.

Mine was painted with Rustoleum Heritage White. I’m sure there are going to be a number to choose from.

In the vintage videos (not sure if they're still accessible here) there was footage of the factory floor where they showed engines lined up on th floor. Even though it was black and white it was clear that some of the engines were white and some were darker, assuming they were Alpine Green. It appeared that they arrived at the factory that way.

I apologize for jumping on this post, I was on Facebook and somebody asked what color white the Detroit diesel‘s were painted with. About 15 minutes later I found the information in my notes and for some reason I opened up Sam’s and saw John’s question and automatically put the color of my engines on that post. Once I posted it I realized my mistake and went to Facebook and answer the original question.

Some Penske era engines were painted red from the factory.
