Do any of you know the OD of the cutlass bearings (or ID of the struts) for a 2" shaft on a 58 YF? Paxton shows a 2-5/8" OD and a 3" OD for this shaft. Just thinking about diving the boat in our 37 deg water causes way too much "shrinkage"!

They are "CALL" at 2 5/8"

Sams has them but I think I bought mine from Deep Blue last time.

LOL, yeah I heard that a cutlass would have alot of "shrinkage"

Always measure after removal if replacing unless you know they have never been worked on...

Thanks guys for the information/advice. Is there anything different (size, removal, installation, etc.) I should know about the cutlass bearing in the shaft alley, just behind the packing gland?

The're isnt a bearing in the shaft log. Only in the struts. You going to do this yourself?

I think he means the forward strut as pictured on my 56.

As you can see, in my case it would take a different length.

Actually, I don't have a forward strut, only an "intermediate" (yes, seems like a contradiction) and the V-strut just forward of the prop. The shaft coupling is between these two struts, both of which appear to have the same length cutlass bearings. Several years ago I replaced these four bearings myself and I guess there may not be another cutlass bearing where the shaft penetrates the hull, but rather just the packing gland inside the hull.

Thanks Rebel. Great pics. Guess I'll wait until the boat has been hauled before ordering the shaft log bearing.

I just relaced mine and had them in the shaft log as well as struts on 36 convertible. In fact the port side was upside down on the shaft log making the set screws unaccesable. Not a big deal, just wondering how stupid/lazy someone could be.

Yep...I've got a cutlass bearing in the shaft log. A total of 6 cutlass bearings on the boat on the 58MY.

I'll b derned. I only have 2 per side in the struts. With 3 I would guess the strut alignment must have to b damn near perfect. My shafts are 15'9" long how long are they on the 58?

Shaft is 17' 9" on a 58YF.

There are 3 per side on the 53MY, but none in the tube, at least not in the 1985 vintage.

Mine seem to get measured in dollars rather than feet/inches.

This is a follow up to my original question about presence/absence of cutlass bearings in the shaft log of a 58 ft YF. As a couple of you noted, there are bearings in the log and they are a different size than those in the struts. The strut bearings are 2-5/8" OD (2" shaft) and the shaft log bearings are 3" OD. Unlike the strut bearings which are obviously pressed into a bronze tube, the shaft log bearings are pushed into a fiberglass tunnel. You need to be careful in removing these bearings so that you don't damage the fiberglass and fairing where it penetrates the hull.

FWIW, on the 58' YF the distance between the outside of the hull and the engine room side of the shaft tunnel is about 51". Our 1977 YF only has a v-strut and an intermediate strut, thus there is about a 12 ft unsupported length of shaft between the intermediate strut and the hull penetration. SAMS told me that the 1980 58's had another short strut in this area but no cutlass bearing in the shaft log.

When I did the 3 per side on mine, the struts were tuff, but the tube units sslid out the back with a cut off broom handle and a mallet in the ER. Theres 3 inside and 3 outside setscrews on mine. I also recommend phenolic shell bearings. Makes replacement much easier next time.
I know, everyone sez they pop right out, but the 40 to 50 bearings Ive done were always a royal pain in the A$$. Shouldve charged by the hour on those!
BTW... my shafts are 16-0 plus a 4 foot stub. 58 TC 1974 ws
