Copper Paint vs Anti-Fouling Paint

There was a time when you put Copper Paint on the bottom of your boat, and it was Red. I do not recall it coming in any other colors and real men did not call in an Anti-Fouling Coating.

Copper paint then was also soft, built up and had to be sanded off. I use a modern self-polishing paint that holds up well for about 3 years, but it is still RED. That just looks Right to me.

It was called copper but it was realy cupperous oxide. Pretty much all antifouling paint is still cupperous oxide regardless of what color they are or weather they're hard or ablative.

Brian, thanks for your kind and helpful reply, and on re-reading my post, I can see how one would conclude from it I did not know that modern bottom paint still had copper in it. My intent here was actually to generate some comment / controversy regarding bottom paint color and show off how nice the Hargrave bow looks with a little red on it.

Halfway through the first coat I took a break and decided to take a photo of the painted red side and the to be painted black side. Later when I was looking at the photos, I was struck with how good the Hatteras bow looked from that angle and how much the red bottom seemed to set things off. I thought I would share the experience. Reminded me of red lipsitck on a very classy lady. Comment on tradition have previouly stirred interest here and I was wondering what color bottom paint Hatteras used during the 43DC production run.

Re cupperous oxide, is that something more than copper with oxygen? Additionally, the old black paint dusted quite a bit when we went over it lightly with the sanding pad on a broom stick and I decided to make another pass with the Porter Cable 505 half sheet sander. I did wear a 3M half face organic respirator during the sanding; however I still came away with the taste of copper. Does this mean I will have no future need for the copper bracelets worn by many of the people who used to be older than me?

I am a fan of red too. My Hatt and previous Bert are/were Black, but I always loved the bright fire engine red tin bottom paint. I finished painting my old Chris Craft with the fire engine red bottom then but a burgandy boot top on. As I was admiring my work, my Father stopped by and asked if I had bought a drum of nail polish from Walgreens. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

I keep mine in the water, so I pretty much don't care what color the bottom is.

Since my waterline stripe is black, if any bottom shows I just like it black.
