Best oil absorbent pads

Cold here in FL today. Perfect time to replace all pads in ER. Capt Dave also has some small pieces tie wrapped to strategic leak points on engines. All show a little oil so will replace those as well.

Question is where to get quality new pads. The ones I have absorb water over time so guessing they are not very good quality. Using up what I have left today and will have a 1'stack in ER for spills. Need new good ones for spring pad replacement.

Get mine at the local hose shop. About $50 for a bag of 100. They carry a less absorbent pad for less. Also, they usually will have a wide selection of oil absorbing products. Oil absorbent pads do not retain water.

Did find the source of a nagging old oil smell I could never trace. There was a folded up black saturated pad way forward under port gear. Got the stinky bastard. Who knows how long it was there. Smelled like the Hackensack river at low tide on a summer day!

Not sure the brand but sailorman in Fort Lauderdale sells them and they seem to do a great job with oil not water, as designed. I think it's $90 for 200. However my memory is not so good on price and quantity.

Wait till you get a set of the blue valve cover gaskets. Trusting those are like trusting a fart after Taco Bell.

Practical Sailor did a review and recommended 3M pads as the best.
I buy at Costco ... best value I have found.

I use 3M and Pig. I kinda like the Pig better but that has little to do with that does a better job.

3M generally makes good products. Not always the cheapest, but at least they are a US based company.

I've been using these for years - work great - and the white color lets you see where any drips are occurring!

I cannot help but notice that all but one of the links are to 100ct bales of diapers whereas the ones I linked to are the same size and quality pads in a 200ct bale. For $55........ The link to the 200ct bale is $90. These things are a generic consumable item if you have Detroits, so you might as well get them at the lowest price.

I wonder if they are a thinner pad based on the "lightweight" in the description. I went to Sailorman to check my memory and they sell 100ct for $89 which isn't as good a deal as others have posted here. I was unable to find them on the Costco sight.

The ones I have were an online buy, not sure where. While they absorb water over time they also absorb every drop of oil. Do they all absorb "some" water over time? Maybe I should just change more often. Don't have much leaking so tend to leave in for the whole year.

they do make different weight pads, some are thicker than others. i got the cheaper thinner ones one time and will never do that again, the tear apart. either pig or 3m for me unless in a jam.

Also, I have been using the gray PIG pads that absorb water also, and found that putting that under the shaft packing, for instance, captures the drips well enough not to accumulate water as often.

Then they just dry out, if it is only water.
