  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I hit a small wood branch on one of my last cruise out. I picked up a very slight vibration so I hauled her out and found two minor bends, one on each blade of the starboard prop. My question is, approximately how much should it cost to straighten out and balance each prop?

Cost is going to be very variable, just contact whatever prop shop you use. Long term damage from the vibration is going to cost more than repairing them anyway.

Only drove the boat 3 hours with vibration. It’s minor bends. See attached.

What you see is small. You don't know if the blades are out and if they're not completely gone over it's a waste.of time.

A good balance is worth the time and cost.

I have tap'd out worse (on the boat) with great results.
Anybody at your yard know how to work a good hammer and heavy hand dolly?

Steve Tomas in Sac is set up with Prop Scan tooling. Last her balanced both of mine, it was in the neighborhood of $1500.00 picked up and delivered back to the yard.

I've paid 200-300 a prop I think, it's been a while though.

I am sure this will start a heated conversation.
Your prop nuts are on wrong.
Should be little nut first big nut last.
Check out ABYC, Coast Guard and SAE for details.

Good to know. I’ll speak to the yard about it. This is the 1 st time in 10 years they have been off.

I'll second Steve's remarks. I spoke with Prop Shop in Richmond, and Svendsen's (who will send it to the Alameda commercial branch) and Steve Thomas was most reasonable and personable.

[I also concur with Tim about the nuts; reference the manufacturer for correct procedure. Lots of yards get this wrong.]
