I just put new batteries in approx 1.5yr ago and am toying with the idea of upgrading to Lithium Ion batteries. Primarily upgrading to save some space in the engine room, but also like the idea of more capacity...etc.

So basically my question is, what is the value of 8 x deka 8v batteries? I paid close to $2500 new for them. These are the big boys, not the golf cart batteries. The batteries have always been kept charged up with a newer charger and are in pristine condition.

So what do you think a fair value is for them?

The market for those is small. Most of us that use them probably wouldn't be interested until we really need them. I'd say you'll be lucky to get $100 each for them.

Ouch! but it is what it is. I would have GLADLY paid $1000 for them used when I bought them new. I'm going to take pics of them this weekend and take voltage readings on all, and make the final decision on selling them. I guess this site would probably be the only people on the entire internet possibly looking for 8v batteries lol.

Thinking my initial ask price is going to be $1000, that's $125/ea, no core charge.

If anybody is interested give me a shout. I don't mind driving to meet someone with them. If you're close (florida/al/ms gulf coast) I'll deliver and even help you get the heavy bastards on the boat lol.

Baltimore is barely a hop, skip and a jump. See you Saturday!

I recently replaced several 8Ds.
Local battery recycler paid me $100 each for old ones.

I’m also looking into this upgrade mainly because the nasty heavy 8Ds are not going in again. Wondering if you mean Lithium Iron instead of Lithium Ion as the former doesn’t burn. Will your charger accommodate Lithium Iron/Ion batteries? Will your insurer be OK with the change? Have you found a suitable replacement? Here’s a short video on subject.. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SHdEzXtglJU

Yes, litium iron, LifePo4 is the chemistry. I'm on the fence about it at this point. Have had people tell me it's a great idea and will be easy, also had people tell me it will fry my alternators and my onboard charger will not work for it.

The primary reason I want to change is space. I REALLY need some space in the ER to store tools to get them out of cabin storage spaces (a direct order from the admiral actually). The biggest space consumers in my ER/bilge are the batteries. I've been very happy with the lead acid performance and never felt short on power on the boat.

Yes, switching to high end batteries seems like a lot of expense for a little more space, but I have no idea where else to get more space?

Mentioned it in a previous post. We replaced our 8 volt Deka's with Full River AGM batteries. Uses the same charger and all I had to do was adjust peak and float voltages.

Purchased NOCO dual 6 volt battery boxes and recovered more than half the space previously used for the lead acid batteries, plus no more having to deal with battery acid and distilled water.

Weight difference wasn't too significant but what made new batteries much easier to handle was their size. A couple of inches taller with a smaller footprint made it easier to muscle into the generator room and over the generator.

BTW, core value on my used Deka's was $25.00 each.

Hmmmph. You call yourself a boat owner? Shame on you. Real boaters always know where to get more space - just buy a bigger boat.
