  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I have a new 500 gps pump installed .My new Ocean Breeze saloon compressor units stops working after about an hour.l am wondering whether the outside position on the four unit manifold at the pump produces less pressure. The compressor unit is on the top shelf of my 1981 53 ..
I undid the hose servicing this unit at the outflow and there did not seem as much water going through as a proportion of the water.New hoses and unit flushed Is the answer a 1000gph pump?

If you're trying to run four AC units off of one 500gph pump, that's not gonna work unless the AC units are really tiny. The manufacturer of the AC units should provide specs for how much raw water they need. You can look at spec sheets for pumps to see how much water they deliver at specific heights. You can use valves to balance out the flow to each unit when there are significant elevation differences.

I have Flagship AC units, and they say their products require 200gph for each ton (12k btu) of capacity.

Does it shut down on high pressure ?

You re not going to run 4 ACs in a 53 on a 500 GPH pump. Especially in summer. You need about 1000gph like the Ac-5C-MD

Just bought March 1000 gph pump Couldn’t find submersible so l am having to make something up to keep any drips hitting the air cooled pump

Air cooled is fine unless you have serious water issues in your ER

Had the best marine electrician in Palm Beach
He fitted the new March 1000 gph pump and rebuilt the ac strainer as well
So far so good on the saloon ac
When bent down squeezed in between the starboard Detroit and the relays his language was fairly interesting

On my 53 the pump was originally under the rack, in the aft outside corner of the port engine room. Second time I had to work on the pump I moved it just inside the aft door, I could kneel in the companionway and work on the pump. What a difference.

That’s a really sensible improvement

And it s an easy one too. You can easily mount the manifold WITH VALVES on the buikhead above the shaft log. Easy to reach and if you need to work on one unit you can still run the others.

When I installed the chillers and during the repower I moved the engine and air con seacocks forward of the engine. I also moved the pump forward. Again easy to reach. And with South Bay strainers, no more than water space inside. So much easier. There is so much that can be done to improve maintenance

I had to replace my ac pump when I first got my boat because the units weren’t cooling well and kept giving me high pressure shutdowns, and if I remember right it was a 1500gph pump. I don’t think a 500gph pump is going to cut it for 4 or more condensing units.
