  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
Last night my a/c made a strange noise. I looked outside and noticed my pump wasnt running. I went below and the pump motor was making noise but you could see the armature wasnt spinning. Are these motors rebuildable and is there is anything i need to watch out for when i remove it?

thanks as always

Do you have a single pump for all the AC's? If so, it may well be rebuildable. I'd suggest taking it to someone who rebuilds pumps and small motors and you can have the pump part serviced at the same time. Make sure you close the sea cock when you pull the inlet hose, and break the electrical connection at the panel.

it is a single pump with two outlets. Thanks Bob

What kind of pump is it? Sometimes you can get it going by taping the back of the shaft (back of the motor) or even free it by putting a big flat s few driver in the back and free it. I had that issue a few times with my old bronze head cruisair pump which I finally ditched for a march.

Over time the metal impeller disintegrate till there is nothing left. The march have a magnetic drive and plastic impellers. They can break sometimes but the impeller can be replaced in 5 minutes without eve pulling the pump out.

its a march pump

Open the pump body and make sure the impeller isn't broken... While the motor can fail, impellers can break as they get brittle with age. It s just a few screws, if you can get to the front you don't even have to pull the pump out. I forgot the price, but it s under $100, I just ordered 2 from WEst

I removed the pump tuesday night, replaced it with a new one from west marine, having the old one rebuilt for a spare. Interesting though, the manufacture date on the pump i removed was 1970. Wouldnt it be nice if the new one lasted as long. Anyway, all's well that ends well. Very comfortable sleeping on the boat last night

Thanks for the advice,

Art
