  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' YACHT FISHERMAN (1972 - 1975)
Having just returned from a month aboard Bill Allen's 1973 43 MY (Brielle NJ to Marathon, Fla) with him I thought I'd share similarities and differences I noted relative to my 1972 48 YF. (also a brief comment later relative to the 44 triple cabin MY).

From the circa 1971 Hatters brochure I have, it seems the overall length's of the YF and 43ft MY were 48ft 9in and 43ft 1", beam 14ft 7in and 14ft even, dry weights of 36,000 lbs and 27,000 lbs according the Hatteras brochure from that era.

Those weights are positively understated....Bill said his 43 MY actually weighed in at the 36,000 lbs on a travel lift attributed to the bigger YF, and another YF owner and I agree the 48YF dry weight is actually about 42,000 lbs. The 43 MY has 10" more freeboard forward...yes, more!! So the YF weighs about 49,000lbs with full fuel (680 gal fuel, 250 water, 80 holding) at 7lbs/gal.

Checking my brochure, it appears the 48 YF and 44 triple cabin (MY) interiors are very similar, virtually indentical, but my YF was a double cabin so there may be subtle differences. Something must be different inside, because the YF cockpit is definitely longer than four feet. Freeboard and beam are identical for these models suggesting the YF hull is an extended triple cabin hull. (As many may know, the 44 triple cabin was available with either 8V53's or 8V71's, the YF with either 8V71's or 8V71TIs.) But the 43MY is definitely a different hull than the other two.

Bill's MY had 671 naturals, 310 HP each; my YF had 8V71TI's at 435 HP each. Bill's 43ft MY averaged about 1.8 NMPG at about 8.8 to 9 knots, at about 1100 RPM while my former 48 YF averaged about 0.9 NPMG (only half) at 11 knots and 1500 RPM. Bill's MY topped out at about 16 knots and my YF about almost 22 knots at the 2300 rated WOT RPM.

43ft MY and 48 YF Yachtfish layout....

Bill's MY has vertical teak hand grips outside his forward head for steadying crew in heavy seas...and also an overhead round dowl type handgrip at the bridge deck entrance to the salon....nice touches....but his entry way from the bridgedeck is center line, not to port as is the YF.... the windshield on the MY is close enough to the standing part of the bridge deck to allow a long manual rod for opening and closing the center windshield window ...instead of the electric motor on the YF....I liked that because I had to replace that motor twice in 11 years!!!....also the steps down to the MY aft cabin are all the way portside...into the area of the master head and shower on the YF...and the master head and shower on the MY are starboard instead of port....The MY layout has about 16" or so of aft (storage) space across the entire stern...with closets aft of each port and starboard bunk ....so the MY bunks sit forward of the aft by that amount, not right against the back as do yhe YF.... the MY rudder shaft log access is under that enclosed aft area...and just about as awkward as the YF access under the cockpit floor...so the MY has no forward closet in the aft stateroom nor desk space starboard as does the single stateroom YF layout...

The MY salon is enclosed with no forward windshield windows...instead the DC has a seat built in on the outside forward deck...ans several storage areas accessible from the inside....I liked the winshield window on my YF but usually had it covered with sunbrella to keep out heat in the summer.... it was nice to look out when anchored in winds to make sure nobody was drifting down...and the MY flybridge is a completely different layout with no built in seating forward of the helm station like the YF, but neither is layout is roomy relative to the roof size as they both have the same older narrow design with roof space all around the outside...

The DC wing doors on Bill's MY had been widened and replaced with plexiglass as I did with my YF wing doors and it seems the originals would have been a bit narrow on the MY....My Oct 1972 doors were placed differently for wider access to catwalks than an earlier April '72 YF which sat alongside my former slip....On the earlier model YF the exterior roof support arch partially blocked catwalk access on the YF. Seems like Hatteras some difficulty designing wing doors on these models.

On the 48 YF, the forward bunks were narrower but longer than the doubles aft...same on the 43 MY. 43MY forward bunks were at least as long as those on the YF, but I did not think to check the after stateroom bunks. MY YF had upper and lower bunks, Bill's MY has vee berths. So closet and drawers were different in the forward staterooms. Both boats had good anchor rope locker space forward.

The forward head shower on the MY is clearly smaller than the YF, and the forward toilet faces aft not forward as does the YF....Due to the smaller size MY shower, the forward head shower door swings out rather than in as on the YF and believe it not, I think Bill's MY has less vertical clearance in his engine room than the YF do...but it's close.....and because the beam is a bit narrower, the 43 MY kitchen sink was longer than wide and the faucet placed at the aft end inside of the outside like the YF...

Anyway, it was really interesting noting the signficiant degree of interior modifications and arrangements when the overall layout...forward and aft staterooms and heads.... was so similar....Oh, and his freeboard is something like 10" higher than our boats.....Once you know that, it's a visible difference outside yet the draft is about identical on the two boats.
