Our 53 has a tubular Jabsco manual bilge pump in each engine room. In cleaning the bilges today (They're dry!!) I found that the strainer/anti backflow valve on one of the units is shot. The strainer sits in the lowest part of the bilge. I checked the internet but cannot find ANY reference to this pump or replacement parts. Anyone know who carries replacement parts for these pumps?

I hate to replace the entire pump just because the strainer/anti backflow valve is bad. I guess I could make a new strainer/anti-backflow valve. It's just a section with a series of holes and a rubber diaghram to stop liquid from going back through the holes. But I'm lazy...

Related...I found some expandable plugs that perfectly fit the limber tubes so I have blocked off the holes that go aft from the engine rooms. I left the forward limbers (into the genny room) open because I can get to that portion (with a lot of contorting and cursing). I also planted a passel of panty hose sections filled with Cascade!

Thanks!

Mike,

You might try here: http://www.marineparts.com/partspages/pumps/brand/jabsco6.htm Just get the anti backflow valve for the hose instead of the pump itself.

Does yours have a 3rd pickup hose to the genny bilge? Mine does, but the hose goes to the port E.R. hand pump and simply ends there right next to the pump. The original schematics for the boat show a "selector" for genny bilge vs. ER bilge, but the only way I see to "select it" would be to unattach the ER hose and clamp the genny bilge hose to the pickup on the pump. Not something I'd want to mess with if I'm ever hand pumping.

I have used these hand pumps to get the most water out of the bilge since they will empty it more than the electric bilge pump, and I can tell you that I'd never want to pump any serious amount of water with them.

Doug,

Yes, ours has a hose from the genny bilge. but it is "permanently" routed to a separate hand pump mounted in the port ER between the passageway wall and the engine mount frame. It looks like a "Gusher" pump but I'm not sure what brand it is. It works very well and, as you said, the manual pumps will all reduce the water level far below th capability of the normal electric bilge pumps.

my 53 has NO manual pump at all. It looks as though none was ever installed. I find this strange, since I thought that all boats of this size were required to have at least one manual pump.

My 1965 50'my has two manual pumps in both ER's. One has a selector valve at the bottom that goes to the genny room hose. Forty years old and still working as long as you pump them every once in a while to keep the parts lubricated.

The whole is only as good as the sum of it's parts, as they say. Hatteras made a good, quality vessel and stuffed all kinds of the best accessories in it that was available in any particular year!

We're more comfortable in our 40 year old vessel than some of our cruising friends in much newer, more expensive vessels. They pass us by every trip...as long as the weather is perfect.

Happy Hatterasing!!

Capt. K

Capt K,

Thanks for the post. Sometime in the next few months, you could do me a big favor and take a picture of the selector valve. I'd like to see if I can reinstall one in my boat.

Doug,

I'll try to get to it this week or by the weekend for sure. If I can't get the pix to post here I can e-mail them direct to you, but I'll try here first so all can see.

K

Thanks! No big rush because I won't get to using it until this winter. (It's summer and I'd rather use the boat than have it use me).

Anyone have a source for the pumps?? I am missing one and want to replace it. Tx, Mike

As per Doug's suggestion, I found and ordered anti-backflow strainers at the website he posted (thanks Doug!). They are not identical in size shape to the originals but they serve the exact same function which is the important part.

I can't find any web reference to these original brass/chrome pumps at all. They were made by Peters and Russell who were bought/absorbed/whatever by ITT/Jabsco. Jabsco now make a smaller diameter, plastic version of the pump which probably works just fine but it's PLASTIC for cripes sake!

I suppose if I could not find an original pump, I'd put one of the plastic versions in or, perhaps better, change both completely and put gushers or similar pumps in each ER to serve the same function.

Steve MacPherson (sp?) who sponsors this web site, is/was the long time parts manager for Hatteras. He probably has the specs in his head on your pump parts. You might give Sams as shot at your pump need.
