Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
The engine room latch on my 53MY fell apart and a replacement is difficult/impossible to find. I drilled a hole in the center of the post, put a cotter pin through, and then flattened the cotter pin with a C clamp. An easy solution until I find a replacement latch.

I also have those ER latches. Thanks for the tip and I will have to bookmark this for future reference.

i drilled the center pin from the back and tapped the hole, screwed in a flat hear machine screw with loctite...been years and still working good

I used one of these locking rings to hold mine in, it’s been two years with no problem so far. I also bought a new one from Sam’s a couple of years ago as a spare. I’m going to try to find it and attach the ID number to the next post. If not you might try on Monday or Tuesday of next week and tell them what you need. They don’t always show everything they carry.

You will never find a new one. Those have been out of stock for years. They do not exist except on our boats.

I’ll check with my friend who is remolding the entire boat. He is replacing all the locks right now. I’ll see if he still has them. They were in rough shape but who knows.

I just tried to get one of these and was told that at some point Hatteras changed the style and they only sell the new ones now, which work fine, actually a better design because they’re tension-adjustable, but the problem is if you want them to match you’re looking at buying 8 at $100+ apiece. I’m still looking for one original one. If anybody has a spare I’d gladly buy it.

My friend is going home to check his storage locker. He thinks is has some. Hold on, I’ll let you know soon.

I’d love ya forever if you can snag me a spare one that I could buy. It really chaps my ass to have to replace all of them when 7 of the 8 are perfectly good, because one got lost. I know Sam’s would take the other 7. The guy on the phone said they get calls for them but have to explain to people that they changed the style so you have to replace all 8 if you want them to match.

As soon as he calls me and sends me a photo of them I’ll let you know. He says he’s sure he’s got some but he just doesn’t know how many and what pieces. He said he put them in a box in his garage and he’ll look for them this coming week.
