Hatteras Model
41' CONVERTBLE-Series I (1964 - 1971)
Hi Everyone,
I am a first time user to this and been around boating my whole life. But, looking to buy my first boat. My dad has always taught and showed me that classic boats are sometimes the best to go with.
I am pretty handy and looking to spend about $30k on this boat I found. I know the owner and he has kept up with the boat since he originally got the boat from his dad in 1984.
Here is the back ground.
It has been on land for 6 years and the paint is starting to peel on the hull. Everything inside was updated in 2005. I am not looking to get this painted preofessionally, I will do it my self.
My question is this a good deal? i know the boat is old, but it has been well maintained except for the paint.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If all it needs is paint, maybe. On land for 6 years - I bet that a lot more is wrong. Are they willing to launch the boat and get everything running so it can be properly surveyed and sea trialed? If not you're buying a project. Start at half price.

That boat will not hit 23kts. Never did with that power package. In the water and running might be worth $25-30k

The listing says MPH.

I have no idea why brokers who should be knowledgeable list boat speeds in MPH.... Oh wait,... maybe it looks better that way.

Hatteras 1968, you're getting good advice here. It may be a gem with minor cosmetic issues, or it could be a mechanic's retirement plan. Cosmetic is cheap compared to mechanical systems. Make sure you know what you're getting.

If I've EVER seen a deal that needed a survey and an engine survey, it's this one. No one, including the seller, has any idea what works and what doesn't on this boat. That's why you need a surveyor for the boat itself, and another one for the engines.

These are nice boats, but they are OLD and typically require a lot of catch-up maintenance unless you know for a fact that it's all been done. And you don't. I'd agree that half is about right. And that advice is coming from one of our forum members who is extremely knowledgeable about boats, is in the business, AND owns an identical boat.

I think I just found this boat on YachtWorld. She has been for sale at the same $49,900 asking price since 2005! Wow.

To everyone. thank you for your feedback. And yes, it is the one on Yachtworld.com I have known the owner and he is actually the broker too. He has been around the boating industry for a long time.

I will have two surveyors one for each boat and the engines. I just wanted to post this info to get feedback on the boat. It sounds like I will not be making any moves until I have those surveys completed.

I will be keeping you up-to-date with this purchase. Please keep your input coming.

Thanks in advance.

When you say paint is peeling on the hull, do you mean bottom paint or the Imron? Make sure you have an agreed price and signed contract before you spend any money on surveys. Do a thorough inspection before surveys. This way you'll have an idea of what might need attention and further evaluation. Good luck, she looks nice from the listing.

She seems to have all the original furniture, which is a plus to some of us who like that kind of stuff.

Well Jim I have some pictures and a story about a 1967C chair I will post a new thread!

I just went thru the same thing a few months ago. I bought a bank repo. , Site unseen , I had to rely on the surveys. Both were very helpful in making the right decision. The surveyor found things I would not be familiar with, ie, DD's ect.

Half sounds like a fair offer, depending on the survey, one Heat Exchange can set you back up to 4000.00 - 6000.00 . I took all the repair issues off the offer @ retail. I have done almost all the repair work myself.

this too is my first Hatteras & 12th boat. The Hatteras boats are a very soild boat. I am still shocked at Quality.

I'm glad We got an older model . (1979 )

good luck & there is great info all over this site. Boatdiesel.com is another good site with lots of good reading.

P.S. It really is insanity..................
