This thread has reminded me that back in 1966 DD permitted only straight 30 wt. oil for 8-71Ns and Allison transmisions. That meant I used the same in the Onan. The only problem was that after a long day of running (done faster then, diesel was only 11 cents/gal at the Key West shrimp docks) when coming down from cruise to idle the low oil pressure alarms would sound and idle pressure would be about 10 psi. Didn't seem to hurt anything though, but the bells were so irritating that most everybody shifted to straight 40 wt oil, despite DD's dire predictions. This took care of the alarm problen. After a decade or so, DD changed its recommendations.
I think oil has improved a lot since then, but I would think that these engines could still run straight 30 wt lube oil. I would stay away from any multigrade oils for these engines. I am very impressed with how well these function in automobiles. Cars are getting 7,500 miles and more per oil change, but DD recommends I change my 6-92TA's oil every 150 hours, or after only about 2,500 miles. Boat engines certainly work harder than car's, but boat conditions don't seem to have the temperature variations and long idling times of an auto.
[Despite recommendations, my car oil gets changed every 3,000 mi and my boat oil every 100 hrs.]
