CF2 oils for DD

This thread has reminded me that back in 1966 DD permitted only straight 30 wt. oil for 8-71Ns and Allison transmisions. That meant I used the same in the Onan. The only problem was that after a long day of running (done faster then, diesel was only 11 cents/gal at the Key West shrimp docks) when coming down from cruise to idle the low oil pressure alarms would sound and idle pressure would be about 10 psi. Didn't seem to hurt anything though, but the bells were so irritating that most everybody shifted to straight 40 wt oil, despite DD's dire predictions. This took care of the alarm problen. After a decade or so, DD changed its recommendations.

I think oil has improved a lot since then, but I would think that these engines could still run straight 30 wt lube oil. I would stay away from any multigrade oils for these engines. I am very impressed with how well these function in automobiles. Cars are getting 7,500 miles and more per oil change, but DD recommends I change my 6-92TA's oil every 150 hours, or after only about 2,500 miles. Boat engines certainly work harder than car's, but boat conditions don't seem to have the temperature variations and long idling times of an auto.

[Despite recommendations, my car oil gets changed every 3,000 mi and my boat oil every 100 hrs.]

The Exxon is tough to find in the NY area. The local truck parts distributor carries Valvoline ALL Fleet Plus CF-2 40W. The specs are listed at:
http://www.valvoline.com/products/All-Climate.pdf

Price in mid November 2007 was a reasonable $45/5gallon pail; much less than the Mobil's Delvac 1240 from DD. The ash content of Delvac and Valvoline is the same 0.8%.

I did not know that Mobil Delvac 1240 was still avail. Is it back on the shelves?? I thought it was dropped as a branded product, when Mobil was purchased/merged with Exxon several years ago. In fact, Mobil Devac 1240 disappeared from the shelves. However, it was/has been replaced by Exxon XD3 (see other post) and I "assumed" that the XD3 became the product re-packaged for DD as the good ole' DD 1240, instead of the Mobil Delvac 1240.

Me, I switched to the Texaco Ursa 40 (6-71N's) , as is stocked in the 5 gal pails and used by the local Hatt shop at both their sites. Also, I can run "out to the freeway" to the local Texaco jobber and pick it up in their little warehouse. "You can go get it yourself, if you want to. You know where to look...". Since then learned that the Ursa 40 is very good for the DD's.

Re: starting in truly cold weather, i.e. no block heater and 30-35 degrees, I would recommend the Mobil 'Delvac 1' straight 40 wgt synthetic. Bloody expensive, but I would assume only a commercial user would use it and run up a lot of hours rapidly. Mobil has a program for their diesel synthetic and allows very high hours between changes, which reduces cost per change and spread over the long hours per change.

Re: car oil changes, I run the Mobil synthetic in my personal vehicles, following the Mobil program. Use the extended 10w-30 with their filter and change at 15,000 miles or annually. Three vehicles now, 205k, sold to relative, now at 300k+, another at 125k. Buick with 188k miles on a GM 3.8 mit supercharger and oil pressure is identical to "new" and the same high pressure numbers as all the Mercedes engines I have had at idle and highway cruise. 70psi start, 60-65 hot running, 35-40 hot idle.

If you're going to run the high-buck synthetic check the sulfated ash numbers and, if ok, install bypass oil filters.

Then sample and change only when shown as required by the sampling system.

This is only practical in cost if you're a commercial user.

I was told by my Mobil distributor that Delvac 1240 was no longer made as well. It was replaced by the Exxon XD3.
