  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
41' DOUBLE CABIN (1962 - 1965)
I installed Buck Algonquin South Bay strainers with brass screens on my two A/C inlets and engine inlets 4 years ago. I've been vert satisfied with their performance and reduced clutter in the engine room.

I just hauled for bottom paint. While removing the screens I found them to be intact but weakened so that portions broke off while removing them. Not a big surprise since they are brass instead of bronze.

I'm interested in others' experience with these strainers. Are you replacing the brass screens every few years? If using the available stainless steel screens, how long do they last?

I ve used them On two boats. First a 70 footer I used to run, 4 total, 5 or 6 years. Never had an issue I believe they were stainless screens

I ve also installed 3 on my 53 three years ago, for the mains and the AC pump. So far so good. They have the bronze screen (I don’t think it’s brass)

I had to replace the screen on the air con strainer last year after a freak incident when I hit a submerged wrecked which damaged the screen. Miraculously neither prop hit...

Thanks Pascal. Did you mount them using one machine screw penetrating the hull so they could be bonded, or just screw them only to the outside of the hull with no bonding?

I'm following. I need to replace my starboard main engine thruHull. It's a 3in Gronco bronze ballvalve unit and the handle shaft broke when closing.
I realize it's damn near impossible to get to the valve handle (port or starboard) due to the internal strainers so considering replacing with Buck Algonquin external rectangular screens. I hear that most of the large sportfishing boats here have made change to external but not sure if it's a good fit for my motoryacht.

Any downside to pulling out the glass strainers and going external beside the obvious gotta dive to clean screen.

Depends where you are. In Chesapeake, not a problem.

The stainless screens foul easily and quickly, btw. To the above, are there bronze screens that will fit?

I replaced all internal strainers with South Bays (except the get set) several years ago on my motor yacht. I've been satisfied with their performance. In our harbor in south-west FL oyster growth has flourished during the last couple of years. They grow not only on the strainer screens but in the through hully fittings, hoses, etc. To deal with this growth I periodically pour muriatic acid down the raw water intake hose. I tie off the open end of the hose above the water line and open the sea cock before pouring in the acid. Any foam that comes out of the hose is easily neutralized with spray battery cleaner. This growth inboard of the external strainer will occur no mater what type of strainer is used.

The Buck Al. screens come in two materials, SS and brass (not bronze). I have no idea why they are not bronze as you would expect. The brass screens last only a few years then fail from de-zinkification. I'm hauled out now and will be installing the spare brass screens I already had on hand. I'll be ordering spare screens of SS in hopes they may last longer.

I made three for my boat 7 years ago with Coosa board and 1/8" G-10 as screen that the holes were drilled in on the drill press i fiberglassed the coosa frame to hull and screwed G10 to frame have work great and no problems .
thats also allowed me to size to each group of thur hulls.

With my boat pulled, just today I inspected the South Bay intake screens. They're good! One screw was missing, so I'm having all 4 holding screws replaced on the engine intakes. Otherwise, the bronze screens (could be brass I guess) look good and feel strong. That's impressive since my records show they were installed in 2012.
