Spoke with Chuck Cameron from the Hatteras factory today and he said the resin change that will withstand ethanol was made before 1987 which is when my boat was made(40 dc 8th made). Still awaiting the results from boatus however. By the way, all the factory boats headed to Fla. for the show were turned around today headed back to New Bern. At this point they just don't know where to go!

latest bit of information to be gleened. i had contacted ocean link about purchasing moeller replacement fuel tanks. they manufacture cross link polyethaline(sp) tanks.
in the conversation i asked brian about the tanks e85 compatability.
it still seems to me that if phase seperation occurs the bottom section of the fuel would be worse than e85.
still looking for answers....

Hello Jim,

Sorry for the delay, but your question sent the manufactures scrambling in regards to E-85 and they kept passing me along to someone new until I received the below response.

Take care and good luck.

Bryan

Bryan,
Moeller’s fuel tanks are compatible with E-10 fuel or 10% ethanol. Moeller does not recommend use of ethanol in quantities of above 10%. E-85 is an extremely harsh fuel and it does nasty things with aluminum. Many of the senders, and fittings used today are based on aluminum alloys. These would have to be changed to stainless steel before any use of E-85 could be initiated. We are looking into this as we see a need for such fuel tanks in the future. We will keep you and all of our customers informed when we achieve the E-85 compatibility.

Was flipping through SEAWORTHY today. They have an article on ethanol that affirms RFG is incompatible with MTBE gasoline.

The article did not address possible issue with fiberglass tanks.

Hello, I am a new member to the forum, and purchased a 1971 38C last Nov. from the great lakes region. About a month ago I recieved a e-mail from my surveyor that had the Boat U.S. warning. This past Monday I spoke with Chuck Fort (of Boat U.S.) regarding this issue at length and he told me that as of the spring of 2006, marina owners will have the option to purchase Standard fuel or fuel that has been treated with ethanol. It is probably a to late for my tanks and how do you really know how much ethanol is in the fuel. I have heard that the addition of ethanol is done at the depot, not at the refinery. Independant test showed as much as 20 to 30% ethanol! My boat is kept in Glen Cove, NY, right in the heart of the problem. Since speaking with Chuck, I have written a letter to my Congressmen regarding this issue and the cost, not only to me but to the other boat owners to rectifey the problem and make our boats safe again. I feel that we as boat owners shouldn't be subject to this fuel in the first place. We use our boats far less, and only 6 or so months out of the year than other vehicles, not to mention we are already suject to the inflated price of gasoline. Now we have to pay for the extra ethanol and fix our boats . . . this a bunch of BS if you ask me!

Anthony
