  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
41' CONVERTBLE-Series I (1964 - 1971)
Got a few in the 41, seem to be confined to a bench in the salon, but see one pile of poop on the teak and holley salon deck. How do I kill the buggers, Middleton wanted 1K to spray the boat. I was thinking if I taped the hatches, engine vents and door, I'd create a "tent" and could bomb, if I could get the right stuff.

Ideas?

you might try one of the orange oil treatment systems being advertised on tv.

If you do bomb, make 100% sure to turn off your battery switches and 110v at the dock !
There have been accidents where a 12v bilge pump or battery charger turned on causing an explosion....

You need to have a professional exterminator tent the entire boat and gas it. If you see one termite it means there are a lot more hiding. Your exterminator should give you a guarantee that he will return and re-gas if any further evidence appears. I have an annual contract for inspection and treatment. Florida now has the flying termites which I believe came in from Formosa. These do not build the raised mud tunnels to the ground that American termites do and so are much harder to inspect for.

As the interiors of our boats are wood this is a very serious problem for southern boats. Formosan termites are said to be killed by freezing. So is kudzu, but it keeps heading north.

termite bait is basically boric acid. If they can be baited the colony should be killed off with less issues than tenting and bombing. Try that first. You can buy 40 mule team borax and mix it with wood pulp and sugar to get a tasty treat for them.
