Back looking for more advice. As I have posted earlier, our 48 is being repainted and currently in the prep stage. The windlass looked like it needed some TLC, so I decided it should be taken down to the metal. Talked to the yard and they agreed, if I get it to the metal, they will prime and top coat, as part of the overall paint job. So I start, and one thing leads to another. I decide I have to remove the rope winch hub and chain gypsy to prep the metal behind them. When I get the chain gypsy off I find a thrust ball bearing, no surprise. The surprise is it just falls apart. The two washers are fine, but the ball bearing cage does not retain the 16 bearings. Also one ball bearing is missing . After cleanup, I find the missing ball bearing, and see that it slightly damaged the cage when it escaped. Have repaired the cage but a new thrust ball bearing assembly would be better than my repair. The complete bearing with washers included is .5 inches thick, 2.0 inches OD and 1.25 inches ID. Unable to find one on the internet.
Two questions. First, should the ball bearings fall out like they did or is the cage worn. Have not seen one in the past that did not retain the actual ball bearings? Second, any leads on a source for a new bearing assembly the size I need? Thanks
